Searching for a decent photobook about Angkor Wat to send to my parents, I realised there wasn’t one. (Except for this forthcoming one by Dawn Rooney, but it’s not out til July). I was quite stunned by this. Angkor is one of the ancient wonders of the world and it’s hardly obscure – thousands of tourists visit it each year.
Even more depressing is that virtually every book about Cambodia is about the genocide, as typified by Thomas Koeschler’s ListMania list. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read most of these books, but it’s sad that genocide is basically all that Cambodia is known for outside of Asia, especially when it has such a rich heritage.
