Singapore is famed for being an economic powerhouse, transforming itself into one of Asia’s wealthiest countries over the last 30 years. The government is beginning to lighten up a little bit, but the city-state still lives under essentially authoritarian rule, where dissidence is not only frowned upon but routinely stamped out. Samuel Leong runs a site which delights in thumbing its nose at the authorities and allows Singaporeans to give vent to their frustrations with the system and the state’s “work hard, play later” ethos – the SammyBoy Times has numerous articles and message boards which show the other side of Singapore beneath the shiny capitalist veneer. It’s NSFW – there’s an awful lot of sex here, in part because Singaporeans are working so hard they’re too tired to get it on. Topics such as “Are Chinese hookers a threat to Singapore society?” or “Have you had sex in strange places or outrageous situations in Singapore” spice up the more political polemics about why Singaporeans should emigrate to Australia or renounce their citizenship. The page is also loaded with porn ads, – you can cut direct to the message boards hosted on Delphi if you prefer to avoid the flesh.
